Yogyakarta Restaurants

Almost everywhere you go in Jogja it seems that you are always no more than a few steps away from some kind of restaurant or eating stall. One of the Jogja food specialties is Gudeg, which is made from young jackfruit and other ingredients. Jogjanese cuisine tends to be a mixture of sweet, savory and spicy at the same time. Since it has not historically had direct access to seafood, traditional Jogja food tends to be based around chicken, goat or beef and many types of vegetables. However, fishponds are common and catfish, called Lele, is also very popular.

In recent years, improved refrigerated transportation permits many types of seafood to be readily available, an influence from Chinese cuisine. For something different, any of the hundreds of Padang style restaurants scattered everywhere serve more or less the same kinds of foods, not as sweet as Jogja style, but more spicy. Recommended local dishes include Gado-gado, a steamed vegetable salad with spicy peanut saucel Nasi Pecel, green vegetables (often including the interesting Cosmos caudatus) with peanut sauce somewhat like that for gado-gado; Saté Ayam (chicken kebob).
There are numerous small restaurants along Jalan Widjilan to the east very close to the Kraton, which serve the Jogja specialty, Nasi Gudeg.
